Hollywood must think Barack Obama is underfed, because the president is set to attend two dinner parties and a big reception Thursday night in a whirlwind tour to raise money largely from those employed in the entertainment industry.
All three DreamWorks SKG founders — Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg – will dine with President Obama at the Tavern in Brentwood, along with about 57 others who have paid $35,800 apiece, according to sources.
The dinner for the rich (and in most cases famous) will follow an Obama fund-raising event at Sony Pictures Studios at 4:30 p.m. attended by a slightly less glamorous crowd of 2,500 who paid between $100 and $2,500 to hobnob with like-minded Democrats and listen to the president’s remarks. Jamie Foxx, Jason Mraz and Rashida Jones are the entertainment.
Sony says it is not the “host” of the event, only the venue, and that the Democratic National Committee and the Obama Victory Fund are the hosts and have paid rent for the space.
Sony chairman and CEO Michael Lynton and other prominent Hollywood folks will also attend a more intimate dinner for the president on the Sony lot that comes just before the dinner with the DreamWorks trio. The Lynton dinner also costs $35,800 a plate, and about 60 people are expected.
Insiders say Katzenberg, along with political consultant Andy Spahn, took the lead in helping to make sure Obama would have a full fund-raising schedule for his 18-hour trip to Los Angeles and that there would be enough wealthy entertainers, TV and movie executives available to populate multiple events.
Insiders said the DNC will likely release a list of the famous attendees at the expensive dinner events once the president has left California, which he’s scheduled to do at about 9 a.m. Friday.
